The old city of Tallinn lies in the Baltic state of Estonia and is a rapidly developing modern city. Here glass fronted buildings mix in with old stone towers and churches sit amid shops and cafes. About Tallinn
Tallinn is the largest city in Estonia with a population of 400,000 and it is also the capital. It sits along the Gulf of Finland on the northern coast of the country. As well as being a renowned Baltic seaport the city is also a centre of technology. One of the best known technologies to come from the city is the internet phone company Skype
The scenic old town has been made a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the cobbled streets of the town wind up to Toompea and the seat of government. You will also find the city castle on its rocky outcrop. The city cathedral is Muscovite styled and was built in 1894 on the orders of Tsar Alexander. The Town Hall square was once where executions took place; now people just enjoy the food and drink in the surrounding bars and cafes.

The Baltic climate is extremely varied. In the summer the temperatures are warm and average 21 degrees while the winter brings freezing temperatures to the region. Minus 8 is the norm in winter. In the summer the country is bathed in sunlight for up to 19 hours while in the winter this can fall to as little as 6 hours. Because of its location on the Baltic during the summer there is occasionally sudden rainfall.
